Chapter Seven
"I am, too. That’s what I came to your house to say this afternoon. I got sidetracked." His blush was cute; it made me want to leap across the table and show him how sorry I was.
"Sorry about that, too. But mostly I’m sorry that we aren’t together anymore. I didn’t mean to break up with you last week." I stared deep into his eyes and begged him to see how sincerely I meant that.
He broke eye contact and stared down at the basket of fries. "I know. I’m not like you, Zeke. I don’t know the right thing to say or do."
I snorted. "Gabe, it’s obvious that I don’t know the right things to do or say either, or we wouldn’t be sitting on opposite sides of this table right now."
And I wouldn’t be waiting for some guy I didn’t know to show up. I cast a surreptitious glance at my phone to check the time. Five minutes. I had five minutes to get back together with Gabe and get him out of here before this new guy showed up. I could only pray the guy wouldn’t be early.
"But you do. I get all tongue tied and can’t say shit, no matter how important it is to me to get it right."
"We can’t talk about this here," I interjected.
But he just went right on, barreled over my words as though I hadn’t even spoken. "You’re absolutely right that you deserve better than me."
I literally saw red. "I never said that. What I said, asshole, is that I deserved to be treated better than you were treating me. Dropping by my house at random, expecting me to be there at your convenience, showing up late or not at all when we had made plans."
He blinked, his mouth dropping open comically. It snapped shut with an audible click, and I cringed at the fury that darkened his face. "I came to see you as often as I could, whenever I could, because I wanted to be with you. I didn’t always call first because I didn’t want you to feel obligated to see me, or to drop what you were doing to be with me. I figured if I got to your place and you weren’t there, I’d go on home and sleep, that if you had other plans you'd just say so."
I was starting to panic, glancing from Gabe to the time and back again. "Okay. I get that. I think. But where were you all those times we had plans and you didn’t show?"
"I was working." His jaw worked furiously and his face darkened. "I work three jobs and take classes in auto repair at the vocational school. Sometimes, I get my schedule mixed up, or I have to work late, or I pick up an extra shift when someone else doesn’t show up."
I felt like shit, but still. "You could call and tell me this so I’m not sitting around waiting for someone who doesn’t show up." Which was a big reason why I was here now.
